An interactive and explorative learning experience that educates users on endangered animals.
Background
Project Endangered is an interactive, web-based experience that tells the story of endangered animals. It was completed as a fourth-year capstone project and was designed and developed over eight months. The project had two key components: a React website and an immersive 3D experience.
Project goals
Increase awareness about endangered animals using an informative website
Create a full-stack web application with a client web server and a database
Allow users to explore each animal’s habitat through an immersive experience
Focuses of design
Responsive — The website and its interactive elements should support desktop and mobile
Accessible — All aspects of the website should be WCAG AA accessible
Age appropriate — Interactions and UX copy should be suitable for the target age group (8-12 year olds)

Throughout the design process, a variety of user testing was conducted with target users to test the usability and user experience of the designs.

Problem 01: Users did not discover some interactive elements, such as the map points
Update: Added micro-animations to elements to show they are interactive
Problem 02: Users did not discover the horizontal scroll functionality as a navigation option
Update: Added a dismissable coach mark to inform users of the scrolling ability
Problem 03: Users were not sure how to launch into the 3D experience
Update: Added a clear call to action button to launch the 3D experience
